Thyroid
Did you know….
9 out of 10 Women With A Diagnosed
Thyroid Condition Have Hashimotos.
Are You One One Of Them?
Listen to a special message from Maria Delgado, AP.

A staggering number of women today are suffering with Thyroid issues- such as Goiter, Hashimoto’s Disease, Hyperthyroidism, Graves disease and Hypothyroidism. In addition, the increasing number of undiagnosed sub clinical thyroid cases are causing tremendous frustration in patients who are continously being told that their blood work are fine while their symptoms and quality of life continous to deteriorate.
Hypothyroidism being the most common of the thyroid issues.
The Thyroid is a small gland that sits in the middle of the front of your neck. Like all your glands it plays a very important role in your health. The Thyroid’s primary function is to regulate metabolism of every single cell in our bodies and it does so by releasing several critical hormones. Thyroid hormones are also involved in maintaining body temperature and blood calcium levels.
Women are more likely to have hypothyroidism. It seldom causes obvious symptoms in the early stages, with the common first signs such as fatigue, weight gain and depression often being overlooked or misdiagnosed. But over time, untreated hypothyroidism can cause a number of health problems such as obesity, joint pain, infertility, pregnancy complications, elevated cholesterol, chronic fatigue and heart disease.
The good news is that with accurate and thorough thyroid function tests, hypothyroidism can be diagnosed in its early subclinical stages and appropriate treatment can be provided.
Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of hypothyroidism as well as:
- Environmental toxicity- these can include halide exposure (chlorine, bromine and fluoride), heavy metals, pesticides, common plastics (such as drinking water bottles)
- Copper toxicity
- Stress (from an endocrine point of view- this means elevated Cortisol levels)
- Nutritional deficiencies (including iodine, zinc, selenium, iron, D3, A)- these can be tested via medical blood tests
- High Reverse T3 (a form of T3 hormone which is inactive)
Hashimoto’s and Graves Disease: The Autoimmune Disorders.
The Immune System is our body’s defense mechanism against infection. When a foreign invader (i.e., bacteria, virus, parasites, etc.) attacks the body, the immune system goes into high gear in order to fight the infection. The immune system responds to these foreign invaders by producing substances known as antibodies, which fight the foreign organisms. These antibodies bind to the foreign substance and effectively neutralize the organism. This is one of our body’s main defenses against infection.
An Autoimmune disorder refers to a condition whereby the immune system malfunctions and begins to produce antibodies against its own tissue. The same antibodies that are supposed to protect against infection now begin to attack the body’s own tissue. Grave’s disease and Hashimoto’s disease are examples of autoimmune disorders of the thyroid gland.
In both of these diseases the body produces antibodies that attack the thyroid gland and lead to a hyper or hypothyroidism later in the course of the illness.
Medical endocrinology traditionally has taken a reductionist approach, examining hormones in isolation, rather than looking at the system as a whole. When it comes to autoimmune diseases, in conventional medicine there is no consensus as to why someone becomes ill with an autoimmune disorder or what actually causes an autoimmune disorder.
Consequently, the treatment for autoimmune disorders has not been very effective. If you don’t understand the underlying cause of an illness, then how can an effective treatment modality be developed?
THAT IS WHY A SUPPORTIVE AND COMPLEMINTARY APPROACH TO HEALTH IS URGENT AND NECESSARY.
